The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted EU integration Law No. 13578, “On Amendments to the Laws of Ukraine on Improving Legislation in the Field of Drinking Water Supply and Wastewater Management.”
The amendments aim to address gaps in the existing regulatory framework and establish the legal mechanisms needed to further align Ukrainian legislation on drinking water supply and wastewater management with European Union law.
In particular, the Law provides for:
✅ introducing a risk-based approach to ensuring drinking water quality throughout the entire supply chain;
✅ improving procedures for connecting facilities to centralised water supply and wastewater systems;
✅ clarifying the powers of state authorities in the field of centralised water supply and wastewater management;
✅ regulating activities related to decentralised wastewater management;
✅ creating the legal framework for strengthened monitoring of drinking water quality and risk management in water supply and wastewater systems.
Adopting the Law is part of implementing the National Programme for the Adaptation of Ukrainian Legislation to European Union Law (EU acquis) and will further implement European requirements, particularly in urban wastewater treatment and the quality of water intended for human consumption.
