Taras Vysotskyi Discussed Adaptation of Ukrainian Legislation to EU Standards in Brussels

During his visit to Brussels, Ukraine’s Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, Taras Vysotskyi, met with Sandra Gallina, Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety.

According to Vysotskyi, the parties discussed further alignment of Ukrainian legislation with European Union standards and the practical implementation of European requirements. The Ukrainian side briefed its European partners on the latest legislative changes. At the same time, the minister noted that EU representatives expect Ukraine to take further steps to align its legislation with and implement European requirements.

Particular attention during the meeting was given to applying the principle of regionalisation in the veterinary and phytosanitary sectors. This principle involves taking into account the epidemiological or phytosanitary situation in specific regions rather than automatically applying the same restrictions across a country.

The parties also discussed preparations for the next meeting of the Ukraine–EU Subcommittee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures. The platform addresses issues related to food safety, animal and plant health, as well as related trade matters.

“We continue to bring Ukrainian rules and the control system into line with European requirements,” Vysotskyi said. He added that, for Ukrainian producers, harmonisation with EU standards should involve not only legislative changes but also clear rules for doing business and further integration into the European market.
